We are pleased to have been awarded funding by Sports England during the Sports England small grants funding round for the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee.
This project is aimed at engaging more people from the BME community in sports, addressing the attitudes and behaviours of the BME community which have become barriers to their involvement in sports/physical activities.
A recent survey of over 14,000 adults in England has revealed that existing inequalities in housing, employment, finances and other issues have had a greater impact on the mental health of people from different BAME groups than white people during the coronavirus pandemic.
As a Community Group, we work with BME women/families and have seen the effects, having to also deal with effects of inequalities, racism, social exclusion and impact of migration while trying to integrate into community.
We also believe that capacity building will help achieve this so we are engaging community leaders and faith groups- which we have identified as a place to reach a large number of the targeted group and work with to hold training sessions/ workshops to drive the importance of sports/physical activity and raise ambassadors within these groups who will in turn host sports sessions within their groups to engage even more people, tackling these issues and being healthier together.
Huge thanks to Sports England for funding this project. Your funding will enable us help and support more people while greatly impacting positively on our community, the larger community and our Nation at large as a healthy community is a wealthier community- reducing pressures on our health service and other infrastructure and resources.
Healthier Together- Yes We Can! Thank you Sport England! This funding will make a huge difference!
The Covid-19 pandemic adversely affected the BAME community possibly due to a number of factors including poor physical activity, poor health habits and risk of chronic disease.
